2026 has brought a surge of humanoid and hybrid robots ranging from speculative rescue machines and mass-market companion androids to traffic-control units and school tutors, highlighting a fast-moving industry colliding with safety, privacy and ethics concerns.
Sataris Robotics drew attention with Three Halves, a 7-foot horned robot centaur marketed for dangerous remote labor such as wildfire response, mudslides and rubble search. The company described it as a teleoperated “superhumanoid general-purpose robot” and said the horns were partly intended to stop it fitting through standard doorways. Skepticism surged because no working footage has been shown, the images appear to be mock-ups, and a published shutdown diagram said operators could disable it by puncturing or shooting its air reservoir.
At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Run Robotics presented a wheel-based centaur robot aimed at inspection, rescue, firefighting, mining and heavy industry. The machine combines a four-wheel chassis with a humanoid upper body, carries a typical payload of 100 to 120 kilograms, and has a maximum static load of 210 kilograms. Run Robotics said more than 95% of core components are domestically produced, an automated assembly line is due in Q4 2026, and the company already has orders.
Official figures cited by industry participants show Chinese companies have developed more than 400 humanoid robot models, described as over half the global total. Domestic quadruped makers also account for roughly 70% of worldwide sales. The numbers underscore China’s push to dominate both supply chains and deployment, not only prototypes.
UBTECH launched its UWorld consumer line on June 30, 2026 under the slogan “Love is eternal,” with prices ranging from 119,800 yuan for a torso-only U1 Light to 990,000 yuan for a full-body Ultra. The company announced 13,361 orders, though deposits were reportedly just 3,000 yuan and refundable. The robots feature silicone skin with pores and fingerprints, facial actuation for dozens of micro-expressions, and persistent memory designed to sustain long-term interaction.
Alongside sales, UBTECH promoted customization tools including 3D facial reconstruction and voice print replication for recreating specific people, including deceased relatives, through a donation program targeting bereaved families and isolated seniors. On July 15, China’s new interim measures for AI anthropomorphic interaction services took effect, banning systems designed to induce emotional dependence or harm real-world relationships. The rules require users to be told they are interacting with a machine, mandate break reminders after two hours, and restrict intimate AI interaction for minors.
The same company is also deploying Walker S2 humanoids at the Fangcheng border crossing in Guangxi under a 264 million yuan contract. Those units guide passengers, answer customs questions, monitor crowds and inspect cargo with scanners linked to customs databases. The contrast is stark: one product is sold as emotional presence in the home, another as a public-security tool at a national border.
In Hangzhou, Subcon Information has deployed T2 traffic robots since May, with 15 units patrolling intersections on wheels from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Equipped with cameras, radar and onboard computing, they warn riders without helmets, detect stop-line violations and flag unsafe e-bike behavior. The company said the robots have issued more than 170,000 warnings and reduced some infractions by over 40%, though those figures were not independently verified.
At the Second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, organizers said 256 robots from 666 teams across 16 countries competed, with participation up 138% from the previous year. A highlight was an autonomous humanoid tennis demonstration in which robots reportedly completed more than 100 consecutive rallies, tracked fast balls, recovered balance and adjusted position dynamically. The emphasis has shifted from controlled lab tasks to messy physical environments.
In Salamanca, a rural school district in New York approved $57,590 for Sally, a life-sized stationary humanoid from Realbotix, to support AI and robotics classes and act as a tutoring interface. The rollout was frozen after scrutiny over student privacy, instructional limits and the company’s links to firms associated with ultra-realistic sex dolls. The controversy intensified because the district serves a large Native American student population, prompting criticism that vulnerable communities were being used as a testing ground.
The 2026 robot wave is no longer defined only by flashy demos. The bigger story is how quickly humanoids are entering factories, streets, borders, homes and classrooms before rules, evidence and public trust have caught up.
