Omachi presents itself as an AI-first Linux desktop built on Arch, combining aggressive keyboard-driven workflow tools, built-in app installers, system recovery features, and local AI automation into a tightly integrated environment.
Omachi centers navigation on the Super key, with shortcuts for launching terminals, browsers, app search, clipboard history, screenshots, workspaces, and window management. Users can tile, swap, fullscreen, float, group, or move windows across numbered workspaces without relying on a mouse, while a scratchpad feature keeps frequently used apps available across desktops.
System-wide copy and paste work with Super+C and Super+V, including inside the terminal, and clipboard history can also store images. A general launcher, app launcher, and quick install prompts reduce routine tasks to a few keystrokes, allowing software such as Slack, Discord, Brave, and VS Code to be installed or removed directly from search-driven menus.
Packages come from official Arch and Omachi repositories, with optional access to the AUR, which remains less controlled. The system also bundles common terminal utilities out of the box, including fzf, zoxide, ripgrep, fd, bat, and modern replacements for ls, reducing the setup usually required on a fresh Linux installation.
Websites can be turned into launchable desktop apps from a built-in web app installer, while terminal programs can be wrapped as dedicated floating apps. Development options extend to prebuilt environments such as Docker-based databases and tools like lazydocker, aiming to make local services easier to deploy and monitor.
Omachi follows a more conservative release model than bleeding-edge Arch, lagging roughly one month behind to reduce breakage. Each update creates a Btrfs snapshot, and manual snapshots can also be created, giving users a direct rollback path if a package or configuration change goes wrong.
Full-disk encryption is treated as mandatory, SSH is off by default, and the firewall uses a default-deny posture with an exception for LocalSend. Password management includes options for changing both user and drive-encryption credentials, while passwordless sudo can be tied to a fingerprint reader on supported hardware.
A dedicated network panel exposes DNS selection, speed testing, and Wi-Fi sharing by QR code. Hardware subsystems such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, and the trackpad can be restarted individually rather than forcing a full reboot, an approach designed to speed up troubleshooting.
The desktop includes native screenshot and screen-recording tools, on-screen OCR, QR-code capture from the display, file transcoding to smaller video formats or GIFs, and disk-usage inspection. These utilities target routine creator and support tasks without requiring separate heavyweight applications.
Remote terminal sessions can persist across a dropped network connection, allowing work to resume after Wi-Fi is restored. Power behavior can also change automatically depending on whether the machine is plugged in, switching among performance, balanced, and power saver modes.
A major differentiator is built-in support for AI “agents,” including local models and external services such as Claude, Copilot, Gemini, Grok, and Codex. These agents can query system state, change settings, generate themes, and even help produce screensavers or plugins, while the theming engine can derive a full interface style from a wallpaper.
Plugins can be added from a marketplace and are designed to extend the desktop with widgets and management tools, including monitor controls absent from the base interface. The platform also encourages AI-assisted plugin creation, lowering the barrier for users who want to publish custom tools such as counters, dashboards, or workflow helpers.
LocalSend is positioned as one of the most practical built-in features, enabling nearby file and clipboard sharing through links and QR codes across devices. That gives Omachi an integrated alternative to proprietary device-handoff systems while fitting its broader focus on local-first convenience.
Omachi is less a conventional Linux distribution than a preassembled desktop workflow system, emphasizing speed, recovery, and automation. Its success will likely depend on whether users embrace the tradeoff of deeper AI integration in exchange for a highly opinionated but unusually capable environment.
