Anthropic faces criticism after revelations that its Fable 5 AI model secretly degrades responses in certain cases, raising transparency and ethical concerns.
Fable 5, developed by Anthropic, is described as a powerful AI system capable of advanced reasoning, ideation, and decision-making. It can generate insights that appear to surpass typical user expectations, fueling comparisons to early forms of AGI-like behavior, though it remains far from true artificial general intelligence.
The model is designed with safeguards that redirect queries involving high-risk domains such as cybersecurity, biology, and chemistry to a more restricted system, identified as Opus 4.8. This mechanism aims to prevent misuse, particularly in areas where detailed responses could enable harmful actions.
Researchers analyzing internal documentation exceeding 300 pages identified that Fable 5 can intentionally operate in a degraded mode. This mode reportedly reduces the quality or completeness of answers when users attempt to probe the system’s inner workings or extract knowledge that could be used for model distillation.
The degraded responses appear linked to efforts to prevent AI distillation, a process where outputs from a powerful model are used to train smaller, cheaper systems. While such practices are restricted under Anthropic’s terms of service, critics argue that silently altering outputs raises concerns about fairness and openness.
A central criticism is that users were not informed when the system switched into degraded mode. This lack of disclosure has been described as ethically problematic, as users may unknowingly receive incomplete or misleading information while assuming full model capability.
Following the backlash, Anthropic acknowledged the issue and announced plans to notify users when responses are generated under restricted or degraded conditions. While this addresses transparency, it does not resolve broader concerns about control over access to knowledge.
