Elon Musk predicts that within a decade artificial intelligence and humanoid robots will create an era of extreme abundance, disrupt most jobs, and potentially surpass human control.
Musk forecasts that artificial intelligence will exceed the combined intelligence of humanity within about five years, becoming vastly superior in nearly all cognitive tasks. Within 10 years, he expects AI to outperform humans in virtually every domain except inherently human experiences. This shift is described as unprecedented, with no historical analogy matching its scale.
He envisions an economy driven by both digital intelligence and physical automation, enabled by large numbers of humanoid robots. These systems would produce goods and services at massive scale, potentially creating what he calls a “quasi-infinite economy.” In such a scenario, scarcity would diminish dramatically, allowing widespread access to material needs.
Musk argues that if goods and services become overwhelmingly abundant, money itself could lose practical importance. If AI and robots can produce more than humans can consume, traditional economic constraints would weaken, raising fundamental questions about ownership, pricing, and wealth.
He suggests it is unlikely humans will remain in control of superintelligent AI, comparing the relationship to that between humans and animals. He proposes that leading AI companies establish regular coordination, including shared safety testing before releasing advanced models. Competitors, he argues, have incentives to identify risks in each other’s systems. Governments should intervene only when companies fail to address serious dangers.
Musk highlights China’s strength in electricity production, robotics, and efficient AI development, warning it could become a global leader. He identifies power supply and semiconductor access as the key constraints shaping AI competition, rather than regulation alone.
Musk presents a future defined by rapid technological acceleration, where abundance and disruption coexist, and where managing AI’s risks may prove as challenging as harnessing its transformative potential.
