Tesla is preparing an August debut for the second-generation Roadster, a long-delayed electric hypercar claimed to combine about 620 miles of range, a top speed above 250 mph, and a radical SpaceX cold-gas thruster package that could briefly lift the car off the ground.
Tesla is expected to unveil the new Roadster in August, with plans pointing to SpaceX’s McGregor, Texas test site rather than a conventional racetrack. The choice reflects the focus on an experimental cold-gas thruster system, internally referred to as A71, rather than only on straight-line acceleration. The demonstration is expected to include the car being lifted off the ground, echoing earlier claims that the model could behave more like an aerospace project than a traditional automobile.
The headline targets remain unusually ambitious even by hypercar standards: roughly 620 to 621 miles of range, 0 to 60 mph in under 2 seconds, and potentially even under 1 second in its most extreme form, along with a top speed above 250 mph. A battery pack of around 200 kWh is associated with those claims. If achieved together in a production vehicle, that mix of range and performance would place the car beyond today’s typical trade-off between weight, acceleration, and endurance.
The SpaceX package does not rely on combustion like a rocket engine. Instead, highly compressed gas is released through nozzles to generate near-instant thrust. Rearward thrust could aid acceleration, opposing thrust could assist braking, and side-directed nozzles could contribute to cornering, effectively adding forces that do not depend solely on tire grip. In theory, a sufficiently strong vertical setup could momentarily lift the car, though the realistic goal appears to be brief hovering rather than sustained flight.
The planned showcase could take place with no one inside the vehicle. Reports indicate the car may be remotely operated while spectators remain hundreds of yards away, not mainly because of speed risk but because the thruster system could generate noise intense enough to create hearing hazards. That detail suggests the highest-output version would operate under conditions far removed from normal road use.
Tesla appears to be separating the project into a more conventional street-usable Roadster and a much more radical SpaceX variant. The latter may not be road legal and could resemble a limited track-only ownership program similar to exotic manufacturers’ restricted-run specials. Pricing for that version could reach hundreds of thousands of dollars or even millions, especially if the high-pressure gas hardware proves difficult and costly to engineer.
Around 2022, internal work reportedly split between two paths: one based on adapting the Model S Plaid architecture, and another built around an ultra-light carbon-fiber tub. Elon Musk is said to have chosen the dedicated hypercar route, abandoning the cheaper option of reusing existing Tesla hardware. That decision forced the company toward specialized composite engineering and low-volume production methods more typical of McLaren, Ferrari, or Lamborghini than of mass-market EV manufacturing.
The car’s styling reportedly evolved through several themes, including inspiration from the Lamborghini Countach and the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. The A71 code name is believed to reference that aircraft influence. By 2025, the design had reportedly become less extreme, with a functional two-seat prototype featuring butterfly doors, but the underlying engineering ambition grew more radical as the thruster concept advanced.
When the second-generation Roadster was first shown in 2017, its numbers stood largely alone. The competitive landscape has since changed, with models such as the Rimac Nevera, BYD Yangwang U9, and Xiaomi SU7 Ultra proving that electric high-performance cars are no longer speculative. That raises the pressure on Tesla: after nearly a decade of delays, simply delivering another very fast EV may not be enough. The company now needs the thruster system to provide a genuine engineering distinction, not just a headline.
The new Roadster now carries a burden larger than its own performance claims: it must justify years of delay by introducing something competitors do not have. If Tesla can turn compressed-gas thrust into a usable hypercar technology, the model could redefine what an electric flagship is supposed to be.
