Investment and jobs

Intel has joined the effort as a partner. Early filings indicate the plant would draw water from a nearby reservoir rather than local groundwater supplies, while the first phase alone is valued at $16.8 billion. Total long-term investment could reach $119 billion, with at least 3,000 jobs expected in surrounding Texas counties.

Tesla seeks site incentives for solar factory

Separate public filings show Tesla is also pursuing a major solar manufacturing project in Fort Bend County, Texas, southwest of Houston. Internally called Project Crystal Sun, the proposed factory carries a price tag of about $10.1 billion and could create nearly 10,000 permanent jobs, though the company has not formally committed to the site and is seeking tax incentives while weighing another state.

Focus on solar cells, not just panel assembly

The Fort Bend proposal goes beyond standard panel assembly. Equipment plans include ingot, wafer, coating and metallization lines, indicating an intention to manufacture solar cells from raw silicon rather than import finished cells from overseas. That would make the facility a vertically integrated operation similar in strategy to Terrafab.

Timeline points to late-decade buildout

If approved, construction on the solar factory would continue through 2028, with operations beginning in early 2029. The plan aligns with Musk’s broader target of building toward 100 gigawatts a year of U.S.-made solar capacity across Tesla and SpaceX within about three years.

Starlink positioned as vehicle infrastructure

Musk also indicated that the Starlink network, including direct-to-cell satellites, could eventually exceed 100,000 satellites, with future generations delivering more than 50 times the bandwidth of current Version 2 satellites. He said every car could eventually have Starlink built in to provide high-bandwidth connectivity at scale, especially where cellular networks are weak.

A step toward off-world transport networks

The case for satellite-based vehicle connectivity extends beyond software updates and diagnostics. For any future Mars settlement, cars, robots and industrial machines would need communications infrastructure from the start, making Starlink a foundational system for transportation and coordination beyond Earth.

The Boring Company pushes “full self-tunneling”

The Boring Company has also detailed higher levels of automation in its Prufrock tunneling machines. As the machine excavates, it installs permanent tunnel lining rings made from six pre-cast concrete segments weighing about 3,750 pounds each, with much of the process now remotely monitored from a control center in Texas. The goal is to reduce underground labor, improve safety and speed up tunnel construction through automation.

CONCLUSION
