An AI agent has autonomously completed a Bitcoin payment for a pizza, marking an early step toward delegating financial transactions to artificial intelligence.
A recent demonstration showed an artificial intelligence agent independently paying for a pizza using Bitcoin, without human intervention. The user simply sent a photo of a QR code invoice along with a short instruction to pay, and the AI executed the transaction on its own.
The choice of a pizza echoes the first recorded Bitcoin transaction in 2010, when a developer spent 10,000 BTC on two pizzas. That historical purchase has since become a cultural milestone, now mirrored by this AI-driven payment.
The transaction relied on the Aqua Bitcoin wallet, developed by Gen 3, alongside a new system called Agentic Aqua. This protocol allows users to delegate wallet control to an AI agent capable of handling financial operations.
The AI agent is not limited to single transactions. It can create wallets, check balances, manage receiving addresses, and send Bitcoin, effectively acting as a full financial operator on behalf of the user.
Private keys remain encrypted locally on the user’s device, and operations are processed locally, reducing some risks. However, the wallet is still a hot wallet, meaning it is connected to the internet and inherently exposed to potential vulnerabilities.
The system is currently in alpha version 0.3.1, indicating it remains experimental. Stability, security, and reliability are still under development, and widespread adoption would require stronger safeguards.
This development suggests a broader shift from delegating tasks to AI toward delegating financial control. Future use cases could include automated payments for groceries, subscriptions, and recurring bills without direct human input.
The emergence of AI-managed crypto transactions signals a potential transformation in personal finance, but significant security and trust challenges remain before widespread adoption becomes viable.
