A proposal to freeze up to 1.7 million dormant Bitcoin to mitigate potential quantum-computing threats has sparked a sharp divide within the crypto community.
A plan put forward by a prominent crypto figure, James, seeks to render inaccessible around 1.7 million Bitcoin, including coins believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto. These funds have remained inactive for years on legacy addresses considered potentially vulnerable. The move aims to preempt future security risks rather than respond to an active breach.
The concern centers on advances in quantum computing, which could theoretically break older cryptographic protections used by early Bitcoin addresses. Some experts argue that sufficiently powerful quantum machines could unlock these wallets, exposing massive holdings. While still debated, the risk is no longer viewed as purely theoretical.
If compromised, these dormant coins could represent roughly 31% of circulating Bitcoin, flooding the market. Such an event could trigger a severe price collapse and undermine trust in the network. The scenario has been likened to a simultaneous large-scale financial breach affecting global markets.
The proposal outlines a staged approach. First, transactions to vulnerable addresses would be blocked. Second, the associated private keys would be invalidated, effectively freezing the funds.
