Unitree’s claim that its G1 humanoid can spar autonomously in real time has intensified scrutiny of how close humanoid robots are to unscripted action in civilian spaces and eventual military use.
On September 7, 2026, Unitree unveiled an AI system called UnifoLMX2 1.0 Zero and released footage of its G1 humanoid sparring with a human. The company said the robot operated in real time with no teleoperation and no pre-scripted choreography, reacting to punches and adjusting its own moves during the exchange. If verified, that would mark a significant step beyond many robot demonstrations that rely on hidden operators or rehearsed routines.
Combat-style interaction is a harder technical problem than walking or grasping because the machine must sense, predict and move within fractions of a second while facing an adversary trying to deceive it. Unitree described the system as a real-time world model, meaning software that predicts near-future physical interactions and plans movement dynamically. That would shift value from hardware alone toward software that can interpret and respond to chaotic environments.
The G1 is priced at roughly $16,000 to $18,000, well below many Western humanoids, giving Unitree a distribution advantage if capability claims hold up. The company had already open-sourced an earlier framework in September 2025, suggesting a strategy of building developer adoption before rivals can set competing standards. The broader implication is that low-cost humanoid bodies paired with stronger autonomy software could accelerate deployment in warehouses, construction and other unstructured settings.
The autonomy claims have not been independently verified, and robotics history is full of overstated demos that fail outside controlled conditions. A robot that can spar in a curated environment is still far from one that can work safely for hours in a cluttered home or busy job site. Independent testing, technical papers and real deployments will determine whether the demonstration represents a durable advance or a narrowly tuned showcase.
A Reuters investigation published the same day found that China’s defense establishment is accelerating research into humanoid military applications. Reviewing more than 100 procurement notices, studies, patents and official records, the reporting found growing work in 2025 and 2026 on perception, manipulation and training systems, along with planning for robots to operate beside troops. Bank of America Global Research estimated Chinese manufacturers accounted for about 95% of global humanoid shipments in 2025, underscoring the industrial base behind that effort.
Chinese military institutions have tested humanoids in scenarios including infiltration, mapping, target location, base patrol and identity checks. A July 2025 article in PLA Daily argued that humanoid missions could evolve from support roles toward primary combat, while an August 2025 paper from an NUDT test center modeled assault teams using humanoids, robot dogs and unmanned vehicles to clear a building floor by floor. No evidence has emerged that the PLA has deployed an armed humanoid operationally, but planning assumptions now extend well beyond logistics.
China is not alone. In 2025, the U.S. Army launched a competition to develop militarized humanoid capabilities for reconnaissance, security, obstacle clearing, hazardous operations and urban combat support, with up to $1.25 million available in follow-on contracts. Even so, analysts cited in the reporting said the United States trails China in two- and four-legged robotic manufacturing capacity.
Any move from remote control to autonomy raises immediate legal and moral questions. The laws of war require distinction between combatants and civilians and restraint toward wounded or surrendering fighters, judgments that remain difficult even for humans. China’s defense ministry said in March 2026 that AI-powered weapons should remain under human control, while the International Committee of the Red Cross has warned autonomous systems may struggle to interpret surrender and intent reliably.
Humanoids are already appearing in shops and restaurants, sometimes with chaotic results. In Saratov, Russia, a widely circulated September 2026 clip showed a small humanoid in an electronics store striking a customer after being shoved, though it remains unclear whether the incident was genuine autonomy, teleoperation or a scripted stunt. Other recent cases have included robots damaging property during dance routines, striking people during demonstrations and lashing out in industrial settings, reinforcing concerns about safety as machines enter public spaces.
The immediate question is no longer whether humanoid robots can move like people, but whether they can make fast decisions safely and under meaningful human control. How that question is answered will shape both commercial adoption and the future boundaries of autonomous force.
