ChatGPT Work and Claude Co-work offer similar built-in desktop browsers, but Claude was generally faster and more reliable on agentic tasks while ChatGPT provided a more polished browser experience with stronger standard browsing features.
Both tools restrict the built-in browser to their desktop apps, with the browser appearing in a side panel to the right of the chat. The layouts are broadly similar, but the workflows differ immediately once a user starts a new session.
ChatGPT Work lets users open the browser at any time and type a URL directly into it, effectively acting like a standard browser from the start. Claude Co-work requires a task to be initiated first before the browser button appears, adding friction for users who simply want to browse the web without prompting the AI.
Both browsers support fullscreen mode, but ChatGPT Work keeps an active chat input available even while the browser is expanded. In Claude Co-work, fullscreen browsing hides the AI conversation, forcing users to collapse the browser before asking questions or issuing new instructions.
In repeated tests opening a single site, Claude consistently launched and navigated faster than ChatGPT Work. The difference was not enormous, but it was noticeable across multiple attempts.
When asked to find three Amazon hiking backpacks for an 8-pound dog, priced under $100 and suitable for carrying water bottles and other items, both systems produced acceptable results. Claude finished in about 1 minute, while ChatGPT Work took 1 minute 22 seconds in the faster configuration.
Performance in ChatGPT Work varied sharply by model. A higher-end Soul setup with high effort and standard speed initially took nearly 7 minutes on the backpack task, while switching to Terra made results much faster without noticeably reducing quality for that relatively simple request. Even so, Claude, whether using Opus or Sonnet, still completed the task faster.
On a straightforward form-filling task, Claude completed the process in roughly 25 to 30 seconds. ChatGPT Work moved quickly as well but repeatedly stopped short of submitting, either asking for final user-provided text or declining to finish without explicit permission, making it less dependable for full task execution.
A more complex assignment involved locating a specific pair of shoes that were backordered on the main listing and adding an in-stock option to a cart without using pre-order. ChatGPT Work on Terra gave up in about 55 seconds, then failed again after a follow-up prompt. Claude instead surfaced alternatives, including immediate shipping from a UK store, another color choice, a pre-order option, or waiting to check again later.
Re-running the shoe task in ChatGPT Work with Soul improved the answer and found the same UK option as Claude, but it took 5 minutes 12 seconds compared with about 2 minutes for Claude. The comparison pointed to a recurring trade-off in ChatGPT Work: faster results with Terra or better reasoning with Soul, while Claude more often balanced both.
As standard browsers, both tools support multiple tabs, URL entry, opening pages in a default browser, importing cookies and passwords, and staying logged in across sessions. ChatGPT Work adds more expected browser conveniences, including visible browsing history, autofill, a password manager, and suggestions based on previously visited sites. Claude Co-work lacks those features and also requires typing full URLs or full search terms more often.
Beyond features, ChatGPT Work appeared more refined in everyday use. Text looked sharper, familiar zoom shortcuts worked as expected, and the interface behaved more like mainstream browsers such as Chrome or Safari. Claude Co-work felt less polished despite its stronger task speed.
Neither product emerged as an outright winner. Claude Co-work currently stands out for faster, more capable task execution, while ChatGPT Work offers the more complete and polished browser for routine everyday use.
