Retail demand was reported at more than 8,000 times subscribed, a record on Shanghai’s tech-focused STAR Market, while offshore derivatives also pointed to a strong debut.

Political and market tailwinds

Unitree, based in Hangzhou, enters public trading amid a broader rebound in Chinese technology stocks. The STAR 50 Index had recovered roughly 15% from an early-August three-month low. The company also benefits from heavyweight backing including Tencent, Alibaba and DeepSeek, and from heightened visibility during the same week as the World Robot Conference in Beijing.

China’s dominance in humanoid shipments

The company said it had cumulatively produced and delivered around 18,000 bipedal humanoid robots across multiple models by July. Smart Analytics Global estimated Unitree shipped about 5,900 humanoids in the first half of 2026, up 170% year on year and equal to 31% of global humanoid shipments. Chinese vendors as a whole accounted for more than 97% of global humanoid robot shipments in that period.

Speed records are still unaudited

The figures remain company-reported rather than independently verified. That caveat matters because Unitree has pursued speed records before: in April, its H1 humanoid was reported at 10 meters per second on a track, with the company itself acknowledging possible measurement error. Even so, founder Wang Xingxing had predicted humanoids would beat human sprint speed by mid-2026, a timeline that now appears close to being met.

Why robots are being pushed like athletes

Extreme running and jumping tests are less about sports than engineering stress. High-speed locomotion and hard landings simultaneously test power systems, balance controllers, perception, motion planning and structural durability. A robot that can survive a violent landing is also addressing problems relevant to rough-terrain movement, disaster zones and hazardous industrial settings.

Real-world rescue tests remain far harder

A firefighting and rescue event at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing showed the limits of current systems. Of 12 teams that ran a Sunday challenge, only three completed all tasks within 30 minutes: identifying hazardous materials, closing three randomly selected valves and extinguishing a fire. Rain, outdoor light changes, imprecise manipulation and balance issues repeatedly disrupted performance.

Teleoperation and specialization remain central

Many teams still relied partly on remote operation, including VR-based control and first-person camera feeds, underscoring how far the field remains from full autonomy. Hardware choices also varied sharply, with some robots using wheels for mobility and others emphasizing dexterous hands. The failures generated useful engineering data, but they also showed that reliability and adaptability, not record-setting athleticism, are still the central obstacles.

Different visions are emerging outside China

Elsewhere, Foundation Robotics has proposed deploying humanoids for US border monitoring, though the Department of Homeland Security said it has no active agreement or pilot. Its Phantom robot is slower, at 1.7 meters per second, but built for endurance, payload and rough terrain. Another company, Fiji Robotics, is pursuing a different path with a cross-embodiment AI model meant to preserve task knowledge when the robot body changes, potentially shifting the race from one general-purpose humanoid form to shared intelligence across specialized machines.
