Large-scale wildfires in France have reignited debate over forest management, public spending priorities, and political accountability.
Recent fires have burned an area estimated at four times the size of Paris, forcing the displacement of around 220,000 people and resulting in fatalities among emergency responders. The scale of destruction has intensified scrutiny of preparedness and crisis response capacity.
Critics highlight a perceived shortage of aerial firefighting equipment, particularly Canadair aircraft, despite France’s strong aeronautics industry. The cost of such aircraft, estimated at €35–40 million each, has been cited in debates over budget allocation and investment priorities.
The workforce of the National Forestry Office (ONF) has reportedly fallen from about 15,000 agents in the 1980s to roughly 7,500 today, while forested land has expanded from 9 million to 17 million hectares since the 1950s. This has led to a sharp increase in the area each agent must oversee.

Public discussion has intensified around government spending choices, with some arguing that funds allocated abroad or to other sectors could be redirected toward civil protection and prevention infrastructure. Others stress the complexity of national budgeting and competing priorities.
Certain critics argue that stricter environmental approaches limiting human intervention in ecosystems may inadvertently increase fire risk. Environmental groups, however, generally advocate balanced management, combining biodiversity protection with risk mitigation.
The fires have renewed focus on the principle that “governing is anticipating”, with calls for improved long-term planning, including equipment procurement, staffing, and early-warning systems.
