Midjourney has launched a new medical imaging division featuring an advanced full-body ultrasound scanner, marking a major expansion from AI image generation into healthcare technology.
Midjourney, widely known for AI image generation, has unveiled Midjourney Medical, a new division focused on healthcare devices. The move represents an expansion rather than a pivot, leveraging the company’s computational expertise and financial independence to pursue ambitious hardware projects.
The flagship device is a ring-shaped ultrasound scanner equipped with roughly 358,000 ultrasonic sensors arranged across 40 systems. It captures detailed internal images by emitting structured waves and collecting high-resolution data, generating 3D maps of the human body with tissue detail down to about 0.5 millimeters.
Each scan produces enormous data flows, with the system processing up to 17 gigabytes per second and over 40 gigabytes per image slice. Reconstruction relies on dozens of servers delivering approximately 2 petaflops of compute, ultimately producing hundreds of cross-sectional images during a 60-second scan.
Artificial intelligence is used to analyze captured images, identifying organs, tissues, and potential abnormalities. The system combines multiple angles and slices into a unified model, enabling earlier detection of conditions such as cancer through frequent, non-invasive scanning.
