OpenAI has introduced a product design plugin that streamlines the process from concept to interactive prototype, enabling faster and more collaborative product development.
The OpenAI Product Design plugin consolidates ideation, prototyping, and sharing into a single workflow. It addresses a long-standing bottleneck in product design: translating early ideas into functional, testable prototypes. By automating multiple steps, it reduces the need for fragmented tools and manual handoffs.
The system begins by asking clarifying questions and analyzing reference materials such as visual briefs. Based on this input, it generates multiple design directions, allowing teams to compare concepts quickly. This accelerates early-stage exploration while maintaining alignment with user intent and design goals.
Once a concept is selected, the model converts it into an interactive prototype using code. It creates necessary visual assets and conducts internal testing, including responsiveness across screen sizes and visual consistency checks against the original concept. This ensures a higher level of fidelity before human review.
Designers can interact directly with the prototype, testing features such as navigation, toggles, and scrolling. The system supports iterative refinement through annotations, enabling targeted feedback and rapid adjustments without restarting the process.
The plugin exports work into Figma, either within an existing board or a newly generated file. Rather than static images, it includes full design context such as user stories, screenshots, and critique notes, allowing teams to continue collaborative editing within familiar tools.
Prototypes can be published as interactive web pages using a feature called Sites. This allows broader teams to explore and evaluate product concepts directly in a browser, improving accessibility and cross-functional collaboration.
