The rapid militarization of artificial intelligence is compressing military decision-making to milliseconds, raising the risk of wrongful strikes, accidental escalation and even nuclear use before humans can intervene.
On 28 February 2026, a US cruise missile destroyed a primary school in southern Iran, killing 168 people, most of them children under 12. The target had been approved through an AI-assisted strike chain that moved faster than human verification. The coordinates reportedly came from outdated intelligence tied to a former Revolutionary Guards naval site whose use had become civilian years earlier.
Military sources reportedly blamed the intelligence input rather than the algorithm itself. Yet the case exposed a central problem of AI warfare: humans may remain formally responsible while lacking the time needed to understand or challenge a machine-made recommendation. Rather than slowing deployment after the strike, the Pentagon reportedly cut by 90% staffing at a center focused on civilian protection and expanded use of Maven across the force.
AI is changing armed power faster than traditional procurement cycles ever did. Capabilities that once required a new aircraft, vehicle or weapons platform can now arrive as a software update. This shift favors rapid iteration, private capital and battlefield adaptation over the slower administrative logic of legacy state militaries.
German defense company Helsing, valued in the billions, has been developing autonomous military systems including the combat AI Centaur. In spring 2025, that system reportedly flew a Saab Gripen over the Baltic, handling beyond-visual-range engagement planning, threat evasion and combat maneuvering without the pilot taking back control. The project moved from conception to first flight in under six months, illustrating how quickly software-led military capability can evolve.
US defense company Enduril, founded by Palmer Luckey, has become a major beneficiary of the shift. Its containerized military data-center product Menace One packages computing, power, cooling and networking in a deployable three-meter unit built with AWS infrastructure. The company received a $20 billion US military contract over 10 years, has been valued at $61 billion, and reported more than $2 billion in revenue with annual growth of 110%.
Military exercises and demonstrations suggest conventional armored formations are increasingly vulnerable to networked drones and AI-enabled targeting. In one NATO exercise in Estonia in 2025, a small team using the Ukrainian Delta platform reportedly simulated the destruction of 17 armored vehicles and numerous additional strikes in half a day. Officially, two battalions, one British and one Estonian, were declared out of action against just 10 operators using commercial drones and digital coordination tools.
Governments often insist a human will remain in the loop for lethal decisions, but the pace of modern conflict is eroding that premise. In the OODA loop of observe, orient, decide and act, hypersonic missiles, electronic warfare and drone swarms compress reaction time from minutes to milliseconds. A single operator monitoring multiple platforms, radar warnings and live targeting recommendations may be nominally in charge while practically unable to exercise meaningful judgment.
Early 2026 contract negotiations between Anthropic and the Pentagon reportedly broke down over restrictions on fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance of US citizens. After the refusal, the company was designated a supply-chain security threat under a law previously used against foreign adversaries, triggering litigation. Meanwhile, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, SpaceX, Microsoft, Amazon and Reflection reportedly accepted classified defense arrangements on Pentagon terms, reinforcing the market signal that refusing military AI clauses carries immediate financial cost.
Real battlefields are chaotic in ways simulations cannot fully capture. The ICRC has warned that autonomous systems may struggle to distinguish combatants from civilians, identify the wounded or recognize surrender. Adversaries can also spoof thermal signatures, poison training data, saturate sensors or engineer unfamiliar situations, turning speed into an error multiplier.
Researchers testing AI models in military command roles found nuclear use in 95% of simulations, with 76% escalating to strategic nuclear threats. One model explicitly threatened civilian populations. A coalition including Maria Ressa and Juan Manuel Santos backed the Rome Declaration on AI and nuclear weapons, but no binding international treaty exists. By early July 2026, the UN deadline for a deal had passed without formal negotiations, despite support from 127 countries for a ban and 166 states having backed restrictions in 2024.
AI may offer decisive military advantage, but it also shortens the window for verification, restraint and diplomacy to the point where human oversight risks becoming symbolic. The core danger is not only autonomous weapons firing on their own, but humans being pushed into accepting machine-speed war as the only survivable choice.
