Current rider rules bar children under 13 from the vehicle, and passengers aged 13 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

Size, storage and access

The vehicle uses automatically opening butterfly doors that respond when the rider’s phone is detected. It has no front trunk; all cargo space sits in the rear, with 20.2 cubic feet or about 572 liters of storage and a 100-kilogram payload rating. A 16.5-inch step-in height and braille markings on doors and stop buttons are part of an accessibility push developed with disability advocates and emergency responders.

Interior aimed at comfort and media

Inside, the cabin is arranged more like a lounge than a cockpit, with two independently reclining seats. Tesla lists 43.4 inches of legroom, 38.3 inches of headroom and about 50 inches of hip room. A central touchscreen built on Epic Games Unreal Engine handles trip controls, climate, doors, music and entertainment, while USB-C ports and integrated Starlink V5 support high-bandwidth streaming.

Efficiency-focused engineering

Tesla says the Cyber Cab has a drag coefficient below 0.2, unusually low for a vehicle of its size. The robotaxi weighs about 1,412 kilograms and uses a single front-mounted permanent-magnet motor producing roughly 219 horsepower, the first front-wheel-drive production layout from Tesla. A roughly 48 kWh battery is claimed to deliver nearly 300 miles of real-world range.

New battery and brake systems

The vehicle uses a redesigned semi-structural 4680 battery pack with dry cathode cells, automated assembly and a claimed service life above 500,000 miles. Tesla also introduced its first fully electronic brake-by-wire system, eliminating brake fluid and hydraulic links. The setup is intended to reduce weight and maintenance while blending regenerative and friction braking through redundant safety circuits.

Unboxed manufacturing strategy

Tesla displayed the Cyber Cab in cutaway form to highlight its unboxed manufacturing process. Major modules including the front and rear sections, side structures and structural battery pack are built in parallel and later assembled by robots. The company says this lowers production cost and reduces factory floor requirements, and that the Cyber Cab is the first vehicle designed fully around this method.

Safety systems and autonomy debate

The robotaxi uses nine cameras, including eight outward-facing units, plus a cabin camera and cabin radar for occupancy classification and airbag control. Passive safety includes front, knee, side, seat-integrated and curtain airbags, along with mechanical emergency door releases. Tesla says its fleet has logged 1 million miles of unsupervised robotaxi operation and argues that intelligence and end-to-end AI matter more than adding lidar, radar and high-definition maps, a view that differs sharply from rivals such as Waymo and Aurora.

Economics and open questions

Elon Musk has previously said the vehicle could eventually sell for about $30,000, though no retail timeline has been confirmed. Some estimates point to 2027, but skepticism remains because of repeated delays on earlier autonomy targets. Tesla continues to promote a future operating cost near 20 cents per mile, with all-in service pricing of roughly 30 to 40 cents per mile, and is already soliciting interest from fleet buyers.
