Elon Musk is integrating SpaceX engineering data into Grok, open-sourcing legacy Tesla vehicles, navigating evolving safety rules, and expanding experiential charging as part of a broader AI-driven strategy.
Elon Musk said SpaceX will contribute a vast archive of engineering data to the next training run of Grok, now under the xAI umbrella. Excluded are materials covered by ITAR, including defense-related systems such as guidance, communications, and missile technologies. The remaining dataset still spans manufacturing, materials science, satellite hardware, and decades of test results, failures, and fixes since 2002.
Unlike textbooks and code, real-world engineering records capture what actually worked and failed under stress. This includes subtle design changes, material performance over repeated launches, and undocumented problem-solving decisions. Such data is rare and concentrated within a few organizations, potentially giving Grok a practical edge in designing and iterating complex machines.
Musk’s companies are converging into complementary data sources: Tesla provides real-world driving data, X supplies large-scale human communication, and SpaceX adds deep engineering knowledge. Together, they form a vertically integrated pipeline of data, talent, and compute aimed at accelerating AI capability development.
Musk forecast that AI could surpass the combined intelligence of all humans within about five years, with the possibility that humans may not remain fully in control within a decade. He reiterated a 10–20% estimated risk of catastrophic outcomes, arguing that development cannot be halted globally and should instead be guided toward beneficial AGI.
A quiet filing revealed Tesla acquired an AI hardware firm for $1.95 billion, mostly in stock, with about 90% of value tied to employee retention and milestones. The target is widely believed to be Destiny AI, linked to former Dojo leaders, underscoring Tesla’s focus on securing specialized talent to build next-generation AI infrastructure.
Following the end of production, Tesla plans to open-source the design and software of the Model S and Model X. This grants access to over a decade of EV engineering, aiding owners, repair shops, and developers. The NHTSA declined to open a defect investigation into hidden manual releases on the 2022 Model 3, citing only a single complaint and no rule requiring clear labeling. However, the agency will draft new federal standards for emergency door releases across the industry. The decision may lead to nationwide requirements affecting all automakers.
The Hollywood Tesla Diner has become the company’s most utilized site, with 80 stalls, about 1,600 daily sessions, and over 21 GWh delivered in its first year. By combining food, entertainment, and charging, the site reframes wait time as an experience. Additional diner locations are planned, signaling a shift toward destination-based charging.
