Unknown hackers steal $320M in Bitcoin from Liquid Network

Liquid Network, Blockstream’s federated Bitcoin sidechain, has been paused after unknown actors withdrew roughly 4,000 BTC from the federation wallet backing L-BTC. The actors described themselves on-chain as “whitehats,” but as of the latest reports on September 7, 2026, the funds had not yet been returned and the incident remained unresolved.

A $320 million withdrawal freezes a Bitcoin sidechain

Liquid Network is facing one of the largest security incidents ever reported in Bitcoin-linked infrastructure after unknown actors withdrew about 4,000 BTC, valued at roughly $320 million, from the Liquid Federation wallet on September 6, 2026 . The wallet held about 4,200 BTC before the incident, meaning the withdrawal represented close to 95% of the reported reserves backing Liquid Bitcoin, or L-BTC .

The network’s own statement, cited by multiple outlets, described the actors as “purported white-hat hackers,” a phrase that has become central to the controversy because the funds were removed first and only then accompanied by on-chain messages seeking contact . Liquid said the withdrawal used the SideSwap Peg-out Authorization Key, or PAK, but also said that the SideSwap key had not been compromised, nor had any other federation keys, leaving the precise attack mechanism unexplained in the first public updates .

In response, Liquid disabled bridge nodes, blocking new transactions from being submitted to the sidechain, and notified exchanges to suspend or prepare to suspend L-BTC deposits and withdrawals . The Block reported that this left the Liquid sidechain “effectively paused” while Blockstream, Liquid’s technology provider, attempted to contact the actors through signed on-chain messages .

What Liquid is, and why the reserve matters

Liquid is a federated Bitcoin sidechain designed for faster settlement, confidential transfers and the issuance of assets on top of Bitcoin infrastructure . Users lock BTC on the Bitcoin main chain and receive a corresponding asset, L-BTC, on Liquid; when users redeem, L-BTC is supposed to be burned and BTC is released through the federation’s peg-out process .

That structure makes the federation reserve central to the system’s credibility. L-BTC is intended to represent Bitcoin held on the main chain, so a large movement out of the reserve immediately raises questions about redemption, solvency perception and operational control, even if the underlying Bitcoin base layer itself is not implicated . Bitcoin Magazine reported that Liquid’s design uses a federation of known members and that 11 of 15 members are required to sign a valid multisignature transaction moving coins from the treasury .

The reported numbers illustrate the scale of the shock. Before the incident, the treasury held more than 4,200 BTC; afterward, Blockstream’s proof-of-reserves page showed a little over 207 BTC remaining, according to Bitcoin Magazine . The same report said 4,019.4 BTC was withdrawn in a peg-out transaction using the SideSwap PAK, while other coverage put the net payout around 3,996 BTC after a customer submitted 4,000 L-BTC to SideSwap’s peg-out service .

The “white hat” claim is under scrutiny

The actors left an on-chain message saying they were white hats and asking Liquid to contact them on-chain . That wording matters because a genuine white-hat operation usually implies responsible disclosure: identifying a vulnerability, minimizing damage, and coordinating with the affected team before funds are put at risk. Here, the actors withdrew most of the reserve before beginning the conversation, which has led security professionals and observers to treat the claim cautiously .

BeInCrypto reported that Charles Guillemet, Ledger’s chief technology officer, questioned the white-hat label and argued that white hats do not normally drain a bridge and then solicit contact afterward . Guillemet later softened the interpretation by suggesting there remained some hope that the actors might have good intentions but lacked normal responsible-disclosure practice, according to the same report .

The ambiguity deepened early on September 7. Cointelegraph, in a report republished by TradingView, said subsequent on-chain messages indicated the actors told Blockstream they would return most of the 4,000 BTC after the Elements vulnerability was patched across the network . BeInCrypto also reported that the address holding the funds signed another message asking whether sending most of the funds back to the federation wallet would be acceptable .

As of those latest reports, however, the funds had not been returned . BeInCrypto said the coins had not left the address that received them and that public records showed the address still held about 3,998 BTC, while the federation wallet retained roughly 197 BTC at press time . Until the coins move back under federation control, the “white hat” label remains an assertion rather than a resolved fact.

SideSwap, Elements and the unexplained route out

The most important technical clue in the first day of reporting concerns SideSwap and Elements. Liquid said the funds were withdrawn through SideSwap’s Peg-out Authorization Key, a mechanism tied to the whitelist process for releasing BTC from Liquid back to the Bitcoin main chain . SideSwap said a customer sent 4,000 L-BTC to its peg-out service at 14:05 UTC, after which the federation paid out 3,996 BTC 23 minutes later .

According to the Cointelegraph report republished by TradingView, SideSwap said its PAK was not compromised and that the L-BTC used in the transaction originated from a bug in Elements, the open-source software underpinning Liquid, rather than from SideSwap’s own systems . BeInCrypto separately reported that Blockstream had traced the L-BTC involved to an Elements software bug, according to SideSwap’s explanation .

That distinction is critical. If the PAK was not stolen and federation keys were not compromised, the incident points away from a simple private-key theft and toward a deeper consensus, accounting or validation failure in the software path that made the peg-out appear valid . Bitcoin Magazine reported a similar hypothesis: that an inflation bug on the L-BTC sidechain may have allowed the actors to create more than 4,000 L-BTC and cash it out for on-chain Bitcoin, though the article also noted that the mechanism had not yet been officially confirmed .

The early facts therefore leave two simultaneous realities. First, a very large amount of Bitcoin did leave the Liquid reserve. Second, the responsible parties and the final technical root cause had not been conclusively established by the public record as of September 7 .

What users and exchanges face now

For users, the immediate effect is operational disruption. Liquid said wallets would be affected and apologized for the inconvenience while federation members worked to restore normal network activity . Exchanges were told to pause L-BTC deposits and withdrawals, limiting the ability to move Liquid’s Bitcoin-backed token through trading venues while the incident remains open .

Other issued assets on Liquid, including USDT, DePix and tokenized real-world assets, were described by Liquid as unaffected by the security incident . That statement narrows the known impact to the Bitcoin reserve and L-BTC redemption path, but it does not eliminate the broader trust problem for users whose ability to redeem or move L-BTC depends on the paused infrastructure .

Bloomberg, in a report republished by Moneyweb, framed the incident as the latest major crypto theft to shake confidence in digital-asset security and said Liquid had halted all new transactions after the withdrawal . The report also repeated Liquid’s position that the perpetrators were “purported white-hat hackers,” highlighting the unresolved tension between the actors’ self-description and the reality that the network’s main Bitcoin reserve was drained .

Why this matters beyond Liquid

The incident is not a hack of Bitcoin’s base protocol. It is a crisis in a federated sidechain that uses Bitcoin as the settlement asset and L-BTC as a representation of locked BTC . That difference is important because Bitcoin’s main chain did not need to fail for users of Bitcoin-linked infrastructure to face a major loss-of-control event.

The episode also reopens a familiar debate in crypto security: bridges and sidechains often concentrate risk in software, validator sets, federation rules and redemption mechanisms. Liquid’s federation model was designed to avoid the single-custodian risk of a conventional exchange wallet, but the reported withdrawal shows that complex peg systems can still fail in ways that are not immediately legible to users .

The next milestones are clear. Observers will watch whether the actors return the funds, whether Blockstream and Liquid publish a full incident report, whether the Elements bug is patched across the federation, and when exchanges restore L-BTC deposits and withdrawals . Until then, the practical status is simple: roughly $320 million in Bitcoin has been removed from Liquid’s federation reserve, the network remains disrupted, and the identity and intentions of the actors remain unproven .
