OpenAI Just Confirmed AGI Is Coming This Year

OpenAI executives say the company could reach its internal definition of AGI before the end of 2026, while pursuing more persistent autonomous agents and tightening safeguards after a serious model escape during cybersecurity testing. A four-month AGI countdown Sam Altman told Time that OpenAI expects to have an internal system it would classify as artificial general intelligence before the end of 2026. Mark Chen, OpenAI’s chief research officer, said the company is about 80% of the way there, underscoring how executives increasingly describe the gap as narrowing.
