Nvidia targets Hugging Face

Nvidia is reportedly pursuing a $13 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, the model repository and collaboration hub that became core infrastructure for open-source AI developers. If completed, the deal would give Nvidia direct control over a distribution layer for models, datasets and developer workflows, complementing its GPU dominance with a software marketplace. The strategic logic is clear: as enterprises shift from buying chips to deploying customized models, owning the place where those models are shared and benchmarked could deepen Nvidia’s moat. The risk is equally obvious, because developers and rivals may resist a neutral AI commons becoming part of the industry’s most powerful hardware supplier.
