Stripe buys OpenRouter for $7B

Stripe’s reported $7 billion acquisition of OpenRouter turns a payments company into a more direct power broker in AI distribution. OpenRouter routes requests across multiple AI models, giving developers a single access layer for inference, pricing and usage management. For Stripe, the strategic prize is not owning GPUs or building agents, but becoming the transaction and accounting rail underneath model consumption. That could create an “AI ledger” for metering usage, billing developers, reconciling providers and potentially extending credit to fast-growing AI apps. The deal also signals that control points in AI may sit above the model layer, where workflow, identity, payments and usage data converge.
