Stripe nears OpenRouter deal
Edition of August 17, 2026 at 12:01 AM UTCFull article

Stripe is reportedly close to acquiring OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, a deal that would push the payments company deeper into the AI application stack. OpenRouter has become a routing layer for developers choosing among frontier and open models, giving apps a single interface for price, latency and capability trade-offs. For Stripe, the logic is clear: AI agents will increasingly make purchases, manage subscriptions and trigger usage-based billing, and model routing sits close to those workflows. A transaction above $7 billion would be one of the clearest signs that AI infrastructure is converging with fintech distribution.
