What does AI actually know about you?
Edition of August 14, 2026 at 12:02 AM UTCFull article

What an AI tool knows about a user depends on what is entered in a chat, whether account-level memory is enabled, how the provider stores and uses data, and whether conversations are used to train future models. Four layers of data use Information shared with an AI can be handled in four main ways: within the live conversation, through a product’s saved memory, inside the provider’s operational systems, and in some cases for training future models. The key questions are where the data goes, why it is kept, and how long it remains available. Providers differ on all three points, making settings and privacy terms central to user control.
