Rather than replacing network engineers, the expansion of AI, data centers and connected infrastructure is increasing the number of environments that require design, operation and troubleshooting expertise. The practical argument is that automation may change workflows, but organizations still need people who understand how networks function when systems fail or require oversight.
The Cisco Certified Network Associate is presented as more than a path into network engineering. Supporters describe it as a foundational credential for careers in cybersecurity, cloud, DevOps, systems operations and even AI-related infrastructure roles because core IT work depends on understanding routing, switching, addressing and connectivity. That broad relevance helps explain why the certification continues to appear on entry and mid-level job roadmaps.
One of the strongest claims around the CCNA is its value as a screening signal on a résumé. Because the certification has existed for years and is familiar across the industry, hiring managers often interpret it as proof that a candidate has invested time in mastering core technical concepts. In at least one cited example, Wells Fargo reportedly would not interview a network engineer candidate without a CCNA, underscoring how some employers still treat it as a minimum qualification.
Cisco announced on May 20, 2026 that the CCNA exam would undergo a significant revision. The updated test is expected to place greater emphasis on newer technologies, expanded troubleshooting and more AI-related content. The final date to take the current exam version is February 2, 2027, creating a limited window for candidates who have already started studying under the existing blueprint.
The case for taking the current exam now rests on preparation maturity. Existing books, courses, labs and study communities are already built around the current CCNA, while the revised version will initially have fewer polished learning resources as publishers and instructors catch up. The argument is that a CCNA earned now should hold comparable résumé value to one earned after the refresh, making delay a potentially costly choice for job seekers.
A 13-week “Fall into CCNA” program is scheduled to begin on September 14 and end on December 11, aimed at helping students prepare before the exam revision takes effect. The program includes video lessons, browser-based labs using real Cisco IOS, quizzes, course materials, live sessions and peer community features intended to improve completion rates. Organizers say the format follows an earlier summer cohort whose participants were already moving to schedule their exams.
The training package is listed at $250 for the focused CCNA program, including videos, labs, quizzes, courseware, live streams and community access, along with academy-branded merchandise. A $300 option adds one year of broader academy access and future course releases. The pricing positions the offer as a fast-track alternative for candidates trying to complete the current certification cycle before the exam changes.
The immediate debate around the CCNA is not whether networking still matters, but how quickly candidates should act before the exam changes. With the current version available until February 2027, the credential remains a recognized gateway into multiple IT careers.
