Apple has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI over alleged trade secret theft as rivalry intensifies across AI, hardware, and space industries.
On July 10, Apple filed a complaint in a California federal court accusing OpenAI of stealing proprietary industrial secrets to develop a competing device. The case centers on alleged misuse of confidential information by former Apple employees now working at OpenAI. Apple claims this data could support the creation of a next-generation hardware product rivaling the iPhone.
The complaint highlights several individuals, including engineer Chang Lu, who reportedly retained access to internal Apple systems after leaving and allegedly extracted sensitive documents. Another key figure, Tang Tan, a longtime Apple hardware leader now at OpenAI, is accused of encouraging recruits to bring confidential knowledge. Apple estimates over 400 former employees have joined OpenAI.
The case may be difficult to win. California law does not enforce non-compete clauses, allowing talent mobility. Apple must therefore prove not just access to secrets but their active use by OpenAI. A critical element involves alleged deception of an Apple supplier to replicate a proprietary manufacturing process, which could strengthen Apple’s claims.
The dispute marks a sharp reversal. In June 2024, Apple integrated ChatGPT into Siri, signaling cooperation. By January 2026, Apple pivoted to Google Gemini, and by mid-2026 the relationship had deteriorated into litigation. The shift reflects broader competition over control of AI ecosystems and user interfaces.
The conflict illustrates a larger strategic race. Tech companies are competing across three fronts: AI models, user access devices, and user attention. Apple dominates hardware access, while OpenAI is rapidly expanding across all three domains, including potential device development with former Apple designers.
Apple has long positioned itself as a privacy-focused company, emphasizing secure user data. Critics argue that AI firms like OpenAI gain access to vast amounts of proprietary and enterprise data through their services, raising questions about trust and competitive advantage in the emerging “intelligence economy.”
The lawsuit adds to mounting pressure on OpenAI, which faces multiple legal and competitive challenges. Elon Musk, already engaged in disputes with OpenAI, publicly criticized CEO Sam Altman, accusing the company of deceptive practices. The increasingly public nature of these conflicts underscores the high stakes in the AI race.
Separately, China achieved a milestone by recovering an orbital rocket booster using a net at sea, a first outside the United States. The Long March rocket, capable of carrying 16 tons to low Earth orbit, demonstrates a novel approach compared to SpaceX’s vertical landings and could reduce launch costs.
The development signals China’s ambition to scale satellite deployment, mirroring SpaceX’s Starlink strategy. SpaceX has already conducted over 580 booster reuses, while China plans multiple recoveries within a year. Control of low Earth orbit, a finite resource, is becoming a strategic priority tied to communications and data infrastructure.
The Apple–OpenAI lawsuit and China’s space advances highlight intensifying global competition over technology platforms, where control of data, devices, and infrastructure will shape the next phase of digital power.
