OpenAI has introduced GPT Live, a full-duplex voice system designed to enable natural, real-time conversations with AI, including interruptions, translation, and live reasoning.
OpenAI unveiled GPT Live, a new voice interaction system integrated into ChatGPT that allows continuous, fluid conversations. Unlike earlier voice assistants, it removes rigid turn-taking, enabling users and AI to speak, interrupt, and respond simultaneously. The system is positioned as a major shift toward more natural human-computer interaction.
At the core is a full-duplex model, meaning it can process input and generate responses at the same time. This allows the AI to handle pauses, mid-sentence corrections, and overlapping speech. The result is a conversational flow closer to human dialogue rather than command-based exchanges.
GPT Live combines conversational responsiveness with deeper reasoning by delegating complex tasks to GPT-5.5 in parallel. While maintaining real-time interaction, it can fact-check information, solve problems, and retrieve up-to-date data without interrupting the conversation. Demonstrations showed the system handling multiple tasks simultaneously, including verifying historical facts, checking transit updates, and retrieving weather forecasts. The model can actively intervene during conversations to provide helpful feedback.
